Copper theft has turned remote telecom and utility sites into targets. Thieves strip ground wire, cable, and bus bar for scrap value, and the damage they leave behind costs far more than the metal is worth — an outage, an expensive repair, and a live site left in a hazardous state. As the problem has grown, FTCI has developed practical ways to make sites far harder to hit.
Site hardening is part of FTCI’s telecom construction services, and it draws on two in-house strengths: certified welders who fabricate physical barriers, and electrical crews who can re-engineer the parts of a site thieves go after. Together they can both prevent a theft and repair the aftermath of one.
Why Copper Theft Targets Telecom Sites
The metal is valuable and the sites are exposed. Copper carries real scrap value, and telecom sites hold a lot of it — often in remote, unmanned locations with little more than a fence between the equipment and the road. That combination makes them a recurring target.
The damage far exceeds the haul. A thief might walk away with a modest amount of scrap, but the site is left with severed grounding, torn-out cable, and downtime while it’s repaired — to say nothing of the safety hazard of exposed, compromised electrical equipment. The cost lands entirely on the site owner.
FTCI's Site-Hardening Methods
Hardening a site works on two fronts: making equipment physically harder to reach, and making what’s there not worth taking. FTCI applies a range of measures depending on the site:
- Welded steel cages and enclosures around vulnerable equipment
- Puck-lock hasps and reinforced access points that resist bolt cutters
- Security fencing and anti-access hardware
- Aluminum wire in place of copper where it removes the incentive to steal
- Exposed conduit slurried and encased so wire can’t be pulled
- Alarms and monitoring to flag intrusion
The mix matters more than any single measure. A cage slows a thief down, but pairing it with low-value aluminum and encased conduit means that even a determined one finds little worth the effort — the most reliable deterrent there is.
Built By In-House Welders And Electrical Crews
What lets FTCI harden a site thoroughly is that the work spans two trades it keeps in-house. The physical barriers — cages, hasps, custom enclosures — are fabricated and welded by certified welders who can build to whatever a given site needs, rather than forcing an off-the-shelf product to fit.
The other half is electrical. Swapping copper for aluminum, re-routing and encasing conduit, and restoring grounding are electrical tasks that have to be done correctly and safely on equipment that’s often still live. Because the same company handles both the steel and the wiring, a site gets hardened as one coordinated job — not a welder and an electrician working from separate scopes and schedules.
Prevention Before a Theft, Repair After One
Hardening a site before it’s hit is the cheaper path. Proactively caging equipment, substituting aluminum, and encasing conduit costs a fraction of what a theft and its downtime do. For sites in areas where theft is common, it’s insurance that pays for itself the first attempt it turns away.
After a theft, repair and hardening go together. When a site has already been stripped, FTCI can restore the grounding and cabling and harden it in the same visit, so it’s back in service and far less likely to be hit again. Fixing the damage without addressing the vulnerability just invites a repeat.
