When utility power fails, something has to carry the load without a gap — and what that something is depends on the equipment. DC power systems keep native DC equipment like telecom gear running; uninterruptible power supplies do the same for AC loads like servers and IT systems. How DC Power Systems And UPS Differ

DC Power Systems

DC power systems supply the low-voltage DC that telecom and network equipment run on directly. Because the battery string sits permanently across the DC bus, the load draws from it the instant utility power drops — there’s no transfer, no switching gap, which is exactly why telecom has relied on DC power for its inherent reliability.

Uninterruptible Power Supplies

A UPS backs up AC equipment — servers, IT, and other AC loads that can’t ride through even a brief interruption. In a double-conversion UPS, the load runs continuously through the inverter, so when utility power fails the batteries carry it seamlessly. It’s the AC-side answer to the same demand for uninterrupted power.

Battery Plant Configuration And Load Distribution

Battery plant configuration sets how long a site rides through. The battery string is sized to the load and the runtime the site needs before a generator picks up or power returns. Getting the capacity, string configuration, and monitoring right is what determines whether the backup actually lasts as long as the design promises.

Load distribution determines how power reaches each piece of equipment. From the plant or UPS, power is distributed to the load through circuits sized and protected for what they feed, often with redundant feeds for critical equipment. Clean, correctly sized distribution is what keeps a fault on one circuit from cascading into others.

Testing Before a Site Goes Live

A backup power system that hasn’t been tested is an assumption, not a safeguard. Before a site relies on it, FTCI verifies the system performs under real conditions through:

  • Load testing to confirm the system carries its rated load
  • Battery capacity and discharge testing to verify runtime
  • Verifying seamless transfer and ride-through on loss of utility power
  • Commissioning the full system against its design

The point of this testing is to find any weakness while it’s harmless — on a controlled test, not during an actual outage when the load is depending on it.
